- Client
Vandersanden's Pirrouet® Factory - Location
Dilsen-Stokkem - Lanklaar - Belgium - Application
CO₂-negative facing brick production - Annual Production Capacity 20 million bricks (expandable to 40 million)
- Key Sustainability Features
CO₂ absorption curing process, green energy-powered facility, reduced raw material consumption
The Challenge
The construction industry is a significant contributor to global CO₂ emissions, and traditional brick manufacturing relies on energy-intensive firing processes. Vandersanden aimed to develop a truly sustainable alternative: a CO₂-negative facing brick that not only minimizes emissions but actively absorbs CO₂. The challenge was to integrate cutting-edge carbonation technology into an industrial-scale production facility while maintaining product durability and aesthetic appeal.
The Solution
Advanced Carbonation Technology
The Pirrouet® brick is produced using an innovative curing process where CO₂ is absorbed from industrial sources, permanently binding it to the brick structure. This method eliminates the need for traditional kilns and significantly reduces energy consumption.

Fully Automated, High-Precision Production
MCT Italy played a crucial role in designing and implementing the state-of-the-art batching and mixing systems to ensure efficiency and precision. Key technological solutions include:
- Automated Aggregate Loading System: Prevents contamination between different colored aggregates and ensures precise material dosing.
- Intensive Mixers: Two high-performance mixers for base and face mix, ensuring optimal material consistency.
- Advanced Weighing and Dosing Systems: Guarantees accuracy in color blending and material composition.
- Green Energy Utilization: The factory operates on renewable energy sources, including solar panels and wind turbines.
The Impact
Environmental Benefits
- CO₂ Capture and Storage: Each ton of Pirrouet® bricks absorbs 60 kg of CO₂ during curing.
- Waste Reduction: Utilization of steel industry byproducts reduces primary raw material consumption by 80%.
- Carbon-Neutral Production: The factory’s energy requirements are met through sustainable sources, further reducing its carbon footprint.
Industry Transformation
Vandersanden’s innovation is already being implemented in sustainable construction projects such as the Green Nobelhorst development in Almere, where 60 energy-efficient homes are being built using Pirrouet® bricks. This project is a model for the future of sustainable urban development.
Future Outlook
With the success of the Pirrouet® factory, Vandersanden is exploring the expansion of similar production facilities across Europe. The goal is to significantly reduce the environmental impact of brick manufacturing and inspire industry-wide adoption of CO₂-negative building materials.
Join the Movement Towards Sustainable Construction
Vandersanden invites construction professionals, developers, and sustainability advocates to collaborate in building a greener future. With the launch of the Pirrouet® factory, the company challenges the industry to rethink traditional building materials and embrace carbon-neutral solutions.
